Cranberries—The Native American Fruit

Cranberries are an increasingly popular fruit; in 2002, more than half a billion pounds of cranberries were harvested in the United States. Of this half a billion pounds of cranberries, a small percentage are grown following the U.S. Department of Agriculture's strict guidelines for organic farming. These top quality, certified organic cranberries are purchased by Santa Cruz Natural Incorporated to create Cranberry Nectar, available in 32 oz. bottles.

How do cranberries grow?
Cranberries, a fruit native to North America, grows on a trailing vine. These vines thrive in particular wetland conditions, often referred to as bogs, which are primarily found in Wisconsin, Massachusetts, New Jersey, Oregon, Washington and other northern states.

Cranberries are harvested in late fall. After harvest, cranberry farmers flood the bogs with water, which, when frozen, helps to insulate the cranberry vine from frost damage. In springtime, farmers empty the bogs and the cranberry vines produce blossoms. In mid-summer, these flowers drop their petals, and the tiny green center is exposed to the sun. Throughout the rest of the summer, this green node grows and turns into a ripe, red cranberry.

Organic cranberry farmers must follow guidelines set by the USDA. These specific rules ensure that the cranberries are grown without the usage of pesticides, among other things. See What is Organic? for more information on organic farming guidelines.

Ways to enjoy cranberries
Cranberries are a versatile and hearty fruit. They provide a good source of vitamin C and dietary fiber and add bright, vibrant color to winter tables. Check your favorite cookbook for recipes featuring cranberries in appetizers, sauces, breads, desserts and beverages.

Santa Cruz Organic's Cranberry Nectar is a wonderful way to enjoy cranberry juice, and is made with only juice and water—no artificial colors or preservatives.
